Hove Museum & Art Gallery

Toys 1 hour, onsite, KS1

Come and see all sorts of toys, old and new, from Vicotrian china dolls and old teddy bears to toys that children would have made and played with in the street. Make your own cup and ball to take home with you. 


Brighton Beach Punch & Judy

Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside (outreach: KS1, KS2)

Who’s over 350 years old and can visit your school? None other than Mr. Punch. With all that history at his wooden fingertips he can help you bring it to life in your classroom.  A visit from a real Punch & Judy ‘Professor’ for a 1.5 hr session tailored to your learning topic includes a performance, a handling collection of puppets, a small display, plenty of Q&A and guaranteed enjoyment.


Brighton Toy and Model Museum

Sessions last between 1.5 and 3 hours, subject to school request. Bespoke sessions and outreach sessions available. Sessions can be enhanced by one of our puppet shows (30 minutes).

Investigate the characteristics of old and new toys, including their materials.

Toys, Puppets and Mechanics EYFS, KS1&2

This fascinating learning session presents Key Stage 1 and 2 children with an investigation into the characteristics of old and new toys, including their materials. Students also look at how toys move, focusing on the different mechanics and forces which power them.

The Victorians KS2

How artefacts in the toy museum represent Victorian life, focusing as requested on the changing role of transport, the growing importance of the seaside as a holiday location, and the issues of toys and play. 

What was it like to be a child in World War II? KS2

Drawing on both artefacts and oral history, investigate how toys and play reflect and represent the impact of war on the lives of children.

Life in Britain since the 1930s KS2

Key Stage 1 and 2 students investigate the nature of play and toys from the 1930s to the present day by drawing on both artefacts and oral history. Sessions can be tailored for individual groups, and entertaining puppet shows can be arranged to further enhance the learning experience.
